Škoda is a concept of a compact model, which is located between Fabia and Octavia, well conceived with the Rapid. However, the technology based on the foundations of the old Octavia did not achieve the success that Skoda wished. Now with a new name and brand new technology, Scala has far greater ambitions. We checked to see if they were grounded this time.
Bombastic announcements to come as a direct rival to Volkswagen Golf, from the time it was in its development phase, have been a great burden from the start. In the Skoda offer, where the Octavia, which actually shares its base with the Golf, has become too big, you really needed a more compact model to bridge the gap created between the Fabia and the Octavia. Still, we see Scala as a great alternative to Golf, but not as such a direct rival.
Similar to what they did with Octavia, this time Škoda also extended the base to its maximum. As the Octavia and MQB platform practically came out of the box and compact form, so did the Scalom, which was made on the MQB A0 platform, come out of the box B segment for which this platform has been used so far.
Scalability of platforms The Volkswagen Group has really brought it to the level of art, so Scala comes in a format that is truly on par with compact competitors such as the Golf, 308 or Megane. With attractive new design and distinctive sharp lines, Scala looks really stylish and attractive. Only when you take a closer look at the rear you can notice a slightly more modest body width and wheel track.
The Scala design follows the well-known, non-obsolete Škoda philosophy, most notably the new details such as the prominent grille and the interestingly shaped stop lights that fit perfectly in the rear. With an optional style package where the rear windshield visually goes down to stop lights, an option that was also available on the Rapid, the Scala looks really good and even prestigious.
We like: space offer, comfortable suspension, great sports seats, ergonomics and clarity …
The Scale’s interior may best reveal a complete shift in quality and value over the Rapid. The wheelbase of 2,649 mm and the shape of the body itself are responsible for the lavish range of space that falls at the very top of the C segment. The 467-liter boot does indeed fulfill all your wishes, but unlike some C-segment representatives, this does not mean that the sacrificed legroom of the passenger is in the second row of seats. On the contrary, there is enough space in the back, it seats very comfortably, and there is also enough space for the heads of passengers. The roof line does not fall, which means a very airy feel and plenty of space even back. At Skoda, Scal has definitely established themselves as masters in maximizing the potential offered by a single platform.
Forward, Scala is equally comfortable. Space is also not lacking, but the biggest novelty is the new cockpit arrangement, which will gradually become the standard for all Skoda models. First of all, there is the digital cockpit, which consists of digital instruments, which of course is on the options list, and the large tablet in the center console. Although we are not a proponent of the “tabletomania” that currently rules, Skoda should admit that the tablet in Scala is low enough “buried” in the center console and looks great as a design element, especially from the profile.
A comfortable driving position and standard good erognomy will appeal to drivers very soon, just like the excellent sports seats that are on the options list and are definitely one of the options we recommend, especially since they have a very reasonable price. Namely, the very comfortable seats offer good cornering support, and the large one-piece backrest offers excellent back support and even longer rides in Scala become a cat’s cough.
The logic and design of a very clean cockpit is essentially limited only by the quality of the decorative inserts, whose finish and quality are not at the level of the rest of the cockpit. Smooth and less expensive plastic that occupies the most surfaces in front of the front passenger with incredible ease of retaining fingerprints, while after that it is very difficult to clean those prints from it. Here, though, we suggest choosing an insert with a matte finish. It should be noted that both the quality of the material and the overall atmosphere is still much better than its predecessor Rapid.
We don’t like it: the price, the quality of the plastic inserts on the console …
Before we even made the first miles with this Scal we must admit that we were skeptical and prejudiced. The damage to the big wheels and low-profile tires with our 1,500-kilometer driving plan didn’t sound like the perfect match. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the first few days of driving around BiH. The 18-inch wheels and low-side tires remain completely in the shadow of the fine-tuned suspension. So far, we have been convinced that adaptive DCC suspension is a “must have” option for cars from the VAG Group, but frankly Scala completely surprised us with a very pleasant depreciation and excellent handling and comfortable driving. Only very sharp and short bumps are more noticeably transposed into the passenger compartment, but this still does not disturb the overall picture of a comfortable car.
When we “set off” on the road Scalom and there she discovered that it was a really serious and mature car, and that kilometers on the highway and at higher speeds “swallowed” with exemplary ease. The sound insulation is very good, and adaptive cruise control and assistance systems make it easier for the driver to do the job as well as in higher-end cars.
The combination of the famous 1.6 TDI engine and seven-speed DSG gearbox is certainly one of the most desirable choices for Scala. Excellent performance, exemplary sleekness and modest fuel economy is something that everyone in the car really wants. Still, as good as it may be, we don’t think it’s an ideal choice for Scala for one simple reason. For now, the price of the Skoda Scale is quite high at the beginning, and with this engine and transmission goes into the territory of prices where Scala is not your first choice.
Fortunately, the Skoda Scala has a really great engine range, so we think that in terms of performance and price, the great turbocharged 1.0 TSI with 115bhp, with very decent equipment, can be obtained for around 30 thousand marks, which is a competitive price for such a spacious and a capable compact. The great combination options and options for Scala allow you to really play around and make it very lavish, but then the price becomes very lavish.
In any case, Scala is what Rapid should have been in every sense, and with a more reasonable price or smarter choice of models and engines, it is very likely that it will gain more popularity than it does. There is simply no reason not to be so, because although it was made on the basis of a small compact, it really outperformed the C-segment compact in many respects.
