In the playful Citroën, they may be thinking of a new generation of a representative model like the C6, but it seems that with the multitalented and eminently comfortable C5, Aircross does not have to spend time and money to develop the next generation of C4 and C5.
Recent reports from European markets say that the latest in a series of newly launched SUVs coming from the booming French car group PSA is selling very well. This is not surprising at all, because Citroën has conceived and built a great all-purpose family car that has received the approval of many, including a significant number of customers who have previously driven cars from other manufacturers. And here is a new reason for us to bow again to the lovely Brit Linda Jackson, who since 2014 has been at the forefront of (still the most creative) car company under the aegis of the aforementioned group.
Not to be confused, the larger (more than two) C5-rated Aircross can be associated with the unprecedented SUV that offers the distance Citroën offered along with its recently retired C5 three-wheeler (nominally belonging to the D segment), but with its overall dimensions However, the C5 Aircross is closer to the latest generation of the C4 (from the C segment), which is also no longer manufactured.
However, much more interesting than the earlier C-Crosser and C4 Aircross (made by Citroën in collaboration with Mitsubishi), the C5 Aircross represents the latest variation on SUVs made on custom C-segment car platforms, with the PSA following the earlier The introduction of the Opel (Grandland X) and Peugeot (3008) is now even stronger in the fight for customers in a category that, whether or not people like it, is becoming more and more prevalent.
With the distinctive face that the current Citroën brings with it, and which is evidently liked by designers at other car companies, the C5 Aircross is the current top of the company’s line of genes, woven with a desire to be different from others, but its harmonious two-volume body with it does not bring too much extravagant design solutions that make Citroën often disliked by most. Then we have another set of reasons why the larger Aircross successfully fills the French company cash register. The sheer distance of the floor from the ground unequivocally suggests that the family-turned SUV is not afraid of bad underpinnings, and the two-tone bodywork takes the whole story to an even greater level. We looked at it from all sides and apart from the fake endings of the exhaust, we found nothing else that could or should have been different.
The essence of the story of Citroën’s “mobile massage parlor” lies behind a large door whose slimness in front of the mirror is taken care of by black plastic shutters. Design solutions, equipment levels, space offered, comfortable colors and quality cabin materials, including seats that are one of the essential elements of Citroën’s roots (comfort above all), rank the C5 Aircross among the most comfortable options even before launch. In addition to adjusting the inclination of the backrest, three separate and equally wide second row seats can also be moved longitudinally, providing passengers with extra inches in legroom, and an interesting TFT dashboard with variable point-to-point configuration and tingling fatigue can travel for hours.
Without Mitsubishi assistance and the C5 Aircross is one of the SUVs offered with no drive option on both axles, and for situations far from dry asphalt there is an optional Grip Control system with several work programs that will try to optimize the front grip drive wheels on substrates (snow, mud, sand …) that are far from the dry asphalt mentioned. The whole thing (simulating a gearbox and gently distributing the available torque) works pretty well in practice. If you stop at the end, you will probably stop with SUVs powered by both axles with wide summer asphalt tires at the ends. Unfortunately, we have been convinced of this several times. All who insist on integral drive will have to look for their SUV somewhere else.
Others may think that the C5 Aircross is one of the cars that (within the mass and the class to which they belong) obediently follow the set path. It is stable and predictable. There is no excessive tilting of the high body, and no unpleasant surprises from the rear semi-rigid axle. However, in front of solid handling, we put the comfort and neatness (and on substrates that are far from ideal) of a newly developed suspension whose shock absorbers are “refined” with progressive hydraulic stops. With technical solutions long tested at the famous Paris-Dakar rally, the suspension is closest to Citroën’s famous hydropneumatic suspension and justifies the advertising slogans that accompany this car.
The C5 Aircross is offered in combination with two gasoline and two diesel engines, and the test car was powered by a more powerful diesel option that housed 177 bhp and 400 lb- ft of torque. Although it is not a “racer” in its philosophy and purpose (because there are such SUVs today), it does not bother with a powerful turbo-diesel engine to travel 200 km / h without special delay in less than nine seconds. Best of all: Silence in which this French car “sails” on the highway.
The more powerful diesel engine is offered exclusively in combination with the 8-speed automatic transmission, which this time comes from the renowned Aisin company and works extraordinarily. No jerk, no restraint, great reading of the intentions of the driver’s right foot. For enthusiasts, there are also levers under the steering wheel for manual gear shifting. It is a pity that they do not follow its rotation, because with the palms on the steering wheel in position “15 to 3” in some turns they remain inaccessible even with the longest fingers.
Because of all that it offers to the driver and his big and small companions, the classy C5 Aircross is one of the most desirable SUVs of this category, for which (given the equipment and powertrain offered), a significantly lower amount of money should be set aside compared to comparative models coming from several (mostly German) car companies. Yes, there are some of us who would definitely be the first choice with an identical C5 Aircross.
